As a citizen of Oakville since 1971, I have watched the town grow from 50,000 people to over 225,000. But it has been done so in a measured way, spread out over an increasing area to avoid overcrowding in any one area. The new TOC plan that the province is trying to force onto Oakville would be in terrible opposition to the Town Council's continued effort to grow the town in a way that preserves the town's charm, appeal and liveability.
The premier's heavy handed approach has 3 objectionable features:
The PROPOSAL would create traffic chaos in the midtown area; and squeezing 11 condo towers in a small geographic area would make it one of the densest population areas in North America,
The PROCESS is anti-democratic in that the government is wielding power over a municipality that has never been approved by voters and has been consistently and unanimously opposed by the democratically elected Oakville Town Council.
The PROPRIETY of the Ontario government's action is questionable. Why is the premier so preoccupied with and insistent upon forcing this issue? Apparently one of the developers who bought up some of the subject lands is a friend of the premier.
The Town of Oakville does not oppose growth or new housing. On the contrary, it has presented its own plan (OPA 70) to achieve those very goals, but in a measured, realistic and appropriate manner.
For all of these reasons, I am strongly opposed to the government's use of four MZO's to override the wishes of the Town of Oakville.
