Cap and trade and carbon taxes are proven to reduce emissions.
The federal government has imposed a carbon tax if the provinces do not implement their own tax or a cap and trade system.
Ontario would, therefore, be exempt from the federal carbon tax if we stayed in cap and trade.
Since cap and trade is forward looking, companies have already bought credits which are now worthless since we are no longer in the trading pool. Those costs will be passed on to consumers.
Then in January the federally mandated carbon tax will take effect. This means that consumers will be doubly taxed on carbon emitting products.
Repealing cap and trade means implementing a carbon tax and the two will overlap.
Keep cap and trade please. It’s better for business, for consumers and the environment.
