I am opposed to this proposed regulation as it would make land use policies less democratic and place politics over sound land policy. The Conservation Authorities have a great deal of local knowledge about the lands in their watersheds. Their expertise is needed to ensure that a proposed development would not lead to flooding and other hazards through the loss of wetlands and woodlands. Ontario is too large for the MNRF to be able judge the merits of all development applications in all areas. Conservation Authorities must be able to continue making permitting decisions to ensure development proposals are sound and will not damage the environment. The proposed legislation would place developers wanting to maximize profit over the rights of Ontario residents and the need to protect our natural infrastructure.
