Climate Change is the most significant issue facing the entire planet today. It will drive economic issues, migration issues, food security, and military conflict over the coming decades. Ontario must be on the forefront of both reducing the production of greenhouse gases which are driving climate change, and efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change that is already inevitable.
Carbon pricing is agreed by scientists and economists around the globe to be the single most impactful government policy to push a transition to a low-carbon economy and significant reductions in green house gas emissions. The previous government's Cap and Trade regime for carbon emissions was an excellent step in this direction, though a true carbon tax which increased according to volumes produced would have been even more impactful.
It seems that the current conservative government wants to dismantle this, at considerable cost to taxpayers, simply because it was something the Liberals put in place, and not because they have a thoughtful replacement for it. Dismantling one regime before coming up with an effective replacement is simply irresponsible - both economically and environmentally.
If the conservative government thinks there is a faster and more effective way to transition Ontario to a low-emmissions economy, they should come up with that plan IN DETAIL, BEFORE dismantling the existing system.
I call on the government to stop this dangerous and small-minded act, and instead engage scientists and policy analysts in a thoughtful review of alternatives and propose a plan that will agressively move Ontario to a low carbon economy over the next 10 years.
My children and grandchildren need to inherit a livable world!
