I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed "Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act, 2024" and specifically the provision that requires the removal of a traffic lane to install bike lanes. While I appreciate the need for more cycling infrastructure, this approach raises significant safety concerns for cyclists.
By removing a traffic lane, the remaining lanes will inevitably become more congested, putting cyclists at greater risk from impatient or frustrated drivers. The close proximity between vehicles and cyclists increases the likelihood of collisions, and without adequate barriers or protective measures, this setup can create dangerous conditions for those on bikes.
A better solution would be to explore alternative ways of creating bike lanes that do not require reducing traffic lanes, such as repurposing parking lanes or enhancing off-road cycling routes. It's crucial that we prioritize the safety of cyclists while also addressing traffic flow.
I urge the government to reconsider this aspect of the legislation and focus on designs that ensure the safety of all road users.
