I would like to start off by saying that there was a time in which I really appreciated Premier Doug Ford's apparent concern for the "little guy". And in a sense, I still do. But now I find myself completely unable to fathom how someone who is so concerned about the well-being of all humanity can be so completely blind to the ONE THING that threatens all of us equally. Climate change is real, and that is a fact. Period. Plus, in light of recent news in which we were informed by scientists that we have even less time to come together over this issue than was previously believed, it is more real than ever. Surely the first Ontario government that is "For the People" would take this issue seriously as it threatens the very concept of "people". So why then have you decided to cancel Cap and Trade, Which was nothing if not a rare step in the right direction? Anything that incentivizes us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and general use of fossil fuels is not only a good idea, but the bare minimum amount of action we should be taking right now. In fact, we should be increasing the carbon tax, banning single use plastics, and also (I know the following isn't fully under the control of the provincial government) doing what we can to reduce the amount of synthetic fibers in clothing. Never has it been more obvious that our production and use of fossil fuels is destroying the world's ecosystems as we know them. I will also acknowledge it's obvious that the action required will be drastic and potentially costly. However, may I simply say who cares? If the only way for humanity to overcome their greatest challenge is to make significant sacrifices, shouldn't we do it? I've overheard young people, an alarmingly large number might I add, who say they do not want to have children. Not for personal reasons, but because they do not believe we will be able to overcome climate change in time to provide a decent future for them. I implore every member of the Ontario government to please do the following for the people: do not ignore climate change and do not cancel Cap and Trade. Instead help us all build a better world.
