Bill 4 should not be passed.
As announced recently by the IPCC (October 8, 2018), the need to reduce our carbon emissions is even more urgent than originally thought. All Bill 4 does is delay the inevitable pain we all need to face to prevent catastrophic climate change, sea level rise and ocean acidification. Rather than taking action, Bill 4 sets us up to start again to develop a plan. The time for planning is long past. We need action now. Putting a price on carbon is one of the few successful strategies we have – cap and trade is a responsible approach to putting a price on carbon. For this reason I urge you to set Bill 4 aside, implement the plan we have and work towards making it stronger: end subsidies and handouts for fossil fuel companies; support clean energy projects; aim for 100 % clean energy in Ontario as quickly as we can move there – 2050 or sooner. Help to make it easier for individuals to reduce their own carbon footprint by supporting new technologies and new technological solutions. Doing so will make Ontario a leader in the new economy. Our children will thank you.
This is the most pressing problem of our age. Do the right thing and work to reduce Ontario’s carbon emissions now.
