I see logic has no place in Ford or the Minister of Transportation's decision making process.
Hoping there's MPPs out there willing to think for themselves and go outside their party lines to stand up for Ontarians on this issue. Vote NO to Bill 212!
Here are some good reasons to vote No to Bill 212:
1) bike lanes create safer roads for ALL
2) bike lanes reduce congestion
3) bike lanes contribute to sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle choices
4) cycling improves citizens' health and bike lanes make cycling more accessible, so more people can choose healthy habits when they have access and feel safe cycling in bike lanes
5) bike lanes provide critical commuting options for people in cities
6) more people cycling = less cars on the road. This reduces traffic!
7) municipalities have the information to make bike lane infrastructure decisions based on their communities needs
8) provincial government will be creating NEW / ADDITIONAL / UNNECESSARY red tape for municipalities to improve transportation and life for their citizens
9) adding redundant layer of approval at provincial level will require more of my money to go to government with no benefit!
10) forcing the removal of existing bike lanes is fiscally irresponsible, especially since we JUST built these lanes. You would be forcing citizens to pay money for you to de-service them with less transportation options, worse gridlock, etc.
11) removing Bloor/Danforth, Yonge & University bike lanes without proper process/consultation is unethical.
12) removing bike lanes will make life worse for MANY Ontarians and increase gridlock by channeling both bikes and cars into the same lane on already
13) Additional construction required to remove bike lanes will increase gridlock expodentially in the city! It will increase commute times for ALL with no long term benefits for anyone! The construction removal will take YEARS to do...
14) car-first mentality is a very outdated way of thinking and planning! It has been shown to be ineffective and adding "just one more car lane" has never relieved traffic or decreased travel times.
15) this legislation is not data-based or reflective of facts in any way - you would be voting to "improve gridlock" under false pretenses. Even the name of this legislation is misleading for the average person or MPP not paying attention! It won't save anyone time and will make gridlock worse all over Ontario!!!
16) this goes against experts in the field of planning and transportation
17) there are no viable "side street" options in Toronto to replace Bloor/Danforth, Yonge or University bike lanes! Those streets provide direct routes, otherwise cyclists will be going in circles or somewhere that's not useful to travel to... Would you tell car drivers to use side streets only when commuting to work, running errands, etc. Is it even possible for you to find a route to do this? If its not logical for a car route how can it be logical for cyclists?
18) Under the assumption that you can even find side streets in Toronto (or elsewhere in Ontario!) to replace the main streets to our bike lanes on, how much longer would it make commute times for cyclists? I can guarantee you it would likely double their commute times... So why is a cyclists commute time not being factored into a legislation literally called "Reducing Gridlock - Saving You Time Act". Is the "You" specifically referring to Car Drivers exclusively? Why are they the only Ontarians whose time is important or worth improving over cyclists safety and time?
19) Your Premier and Minister of Transportation are sneaking into this legislation a sideline of an essential environmental scan before they build a new highway. Do they already know it won't pass the environmental scan? Ask yourself why they don't want one done and why circumventing the environmental scan could impact Ontarians and their environment for decades and generations in the future. Don't you want to ensure things are done properly to ensure the longevity of Ontario's environment and conserve critical wildlife/environments? If its safe to do it should be documented and shown to Ontarians before it's built to prove so!
This is a short list! These are sooo many things wrong with this legislation.
VOTE NO TO LEGISLATION 212. IT WONT HELP ANYONE, IT WILL INCREASE GRIDLOCK, KILL PEOPLE, DEVASTATE THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE LONG RUN, & INCREASE COMMUTING TIME ACROSS ONTARIO!
MPPs STAND UP FOR ONTARIANS YOU'VE BEEN CHOSEN TO REPRESENT. THIS BILL DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! IT IS NOT WHAT PEOPLE WANT.
