Hello,
Please remove from and do not install bicycle lanes on roads that are important for large-volume automobile traffic, especially roads that are vital for ensuring traffic flow during morning and late afternoon rush hours.
Bicycle lanes on nearby low-volume roads that are parallel to large-volume roads are better for overall traffic flow and safety.
Two examples in Ottawa are O’Connor Street and Main Street, both of which have had automobile lanes turned over exclusively to cyclists, thereby reducing the number of automobile lanes for morning and/or late-day rush hour traffic volumes. Further, traffic congestion created by fewer automobile lanes restricts the speed of emergency vehicles, the effectiveness of which depends on wide roads and less unnecessary congestion. Main Street in Ottawa leads from downtown to Smyth Road where the Ottawa General Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario are.
Thank you.
