I am concerned about the potential impact of Bill 212 on jurisdictions other than Toronto. While the bill aims to reduce gridlock in Toronto, this issue may not fully apply to other communities. Guidelines for bike lane implementation are essential, but Toronto’s needs differ from much of the rest of the province. I worry that added bureaucracy could slow bike infrastructure development in areas that have already lagged behind other regions.
As a cyclist, business leader, and cycling advocate, I support thoughtful, locally tailored improvements to cycling infrastructure. If Bill 212’s true goal is to improve bike infrastructure, it should clearly state this to gain support from cycling advocates across Ontario, which is a far better strategy than angering and alienating them! Cyclists aren’t to blame for gridlock, too many cars are.
