I think closing down the White Pines Wind project is definitely a bad idea. We should be increasing our stock of renewable energy sources, not closing them down. Closing this project down sends a message to Ontario, Canada and the world that the government of Ontario is not a partner in the fight to leave a cleaner, more liveable environment for our grand-children and their grand-children.
All the permits were granted to proceed with this project, and there will be a cost to the tax-payers of Ontario to shut it down, regardless of what the government says. What is the message this closure will send to our young people? They will think that there is no future in seeking a career in renewable energy. The rest of the world is moving ahead in this regard, and those jurisdictions that bury their head in the sand, will be left behind. There is no doubt that renewable sources of energy will play a large role in future economies. The evidence overwhelmingly shows that in the long run, developing and implementing a renewable energy industry results in a net gain of jobs.
I cannot recall a huge outcry from the public when this project was going through the approval process. It is expected that some residents would have been against it, as in any new idea or project. It is the government's job to weigh the overall long term benefits versus drawbacks. Closing the White Pines wind project is nothing but an act of shortsightedness for perceived political gain.
