Traffic in Toronto is an urban planning issue that has nothing to do with the bike lanes. It if anything has more to do with the lack of delivery of updated transit options and consistent building/upgrades over the many past decades.
Removing bike lanes does not remove the cyclists. Without them, you will have cars and bikes together on the same narrow road, causing cars to move slower in and around the individuals cycling. It is more dangerous for everyone involved and will not result in better traffic flow. The amount of cycling injuries and death in the city is UNACCEPTABLE. it is safer for all involved to have dedicated and protected bike lanes. The presence of dedicated bike lanes also opens up the possibility of dedicated cycling traffic signals (similar to the ones added to the bloor/keele/parkside intersection). I am also a driver in the city and prefer when cyclists, and smaller motorized bikes and scooters have their own lanes. It reduces stress, and increases visibility.
This is all to say nothing of the traffic that will caused by the construction necessary to remove them.
The city should be moving TOWARD greener, safer, more sustainable transportation options versus doubling down on car centric policies that do not support the community or safety.
