There is no transparency or clarity around what constitutes a 'special economic zone'. This reads that any sitting government will have full capability to select any project as a special economic zone to override what little protections remain.
Under a register-first model, how can development protect existing species when there is no requirement for them to even understand what species inhabit the site? It is difficult to believe that a project developer that causes damage to species at risk will suffer any consequences, and regardless, the damage done will possibly be irreversible.
I support changes to policy to improve the speed at which projects can be evaluated and approved, but I do not support this approach. When is this government going to take any meaningful steps to protect and enrich the natural resources that make Ontario an attractive place to live? From past scandals from the current government, it is obvious that this proposed legislation is another opportunity for corruption and destruction.
