I strongly appose the removal of the Environmental Assessment Requirements for York 1 Waste disposal Site project. I also strongly disagree with the "Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act 2025."
Both of these proposals are ignoring the voice of the residents of Dresden and the surrounding areas. Our community has vehemently opposed the reopening of the dormant landfill (at 29831 Irish School Rd, Dresden On) since the plans were made public in Feb 2024. The reasons for not moving forward with this project have not changed. A Environmental Assessment would address all our objections including these :
1. Location is too close to Dresden, less than a km from my personal residence. W hat will it do to the value of my house?
2, The amount of traffic on St George St and surrounding roads, 700 trucks a day. I am concerned about my safety trying to pull onto the main street from my sidestreet. I am senior who walks a lot and will find even crossing the street on this main thorofare which takes me to my grocery store or shopping downtown will be unsafe. Our students at our high school and elementary schools are going to be in danger having to cross the street to get to and from school.
3. Noise and pollution will be a health hazard. Asbestos and other toxins are a dangerous health risk. my rights to living in a safe environment are being sacrificed
4. The risks to our endangered species. Many rare species found in the Sydenham watershed are at risk. Fishing and enjoying our Sydenham River are mental health and physical recreation venues that I will be deprived of.
5.Economic prosperity and tourism is at risk. I am a community booster believing in creating a vibrant business community and a safe place to live and raise a family. A landfill so close to our downtown will squash our attraction to visitors/tourism . We are a destination for those interested in black history and the proximity of a large landfill will deter visitors. Our successful Night Market which have boosted our town as a top 100 festival in Ontario will be at risk.
I disagree with the removing of the Environmental Assessment. I do not agree with the passing of the Economy Act. It should be defeated in the house of commons.
