I strongly oppose Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. This bill threatens Ontario’s Indigenous right, natural heritage and democratic processes.
By repealing the Endangered Species Act, Bill 5 would replace enforceable protections with vague, non-binding goals which accelerates the decline of already at-risk species. This isn’t modernization; it’s reckless deregulation in favour of short-term industrial gains over long-term ecological and community well-being!
The bill’s so-called “special economic zones” undermines transparency, accountability, and Ontario’s obligations under Indigenous treaties. You cannot allow development without environmental assessments, public input, or Indigenous consultation.
Ontarians have not asked for weaker environmental protections or diminished public voice. Bill 5 would silence communities, sideline science, and undo decades of environmental progress.
I urge the Ontario government to withdraw Bill 5 entirely and instead collaborate with Indigenous leaders, scientists, and the public to strengthen, NOT dismantle our environmental safeguards.
Destroying nature for short-term profit threatens everything we depend on. You don’t build a strong country by tearing down what makes it livable! Real Canadian leadership means protecting the land that sustains us.
