Bill 5 will wipe out Ontario's award-winning Species Conservation Act and replace it with legislation which allows, as yet, unnamed government-appointed individuals (developers maybe?) to decide which species deserve protection (currently an independent arms-length committee does this);
limits species habitat protection to the "critical root zone" of an endangered plant or the occupied nest or den of an endangered animal; and wipes out the need to obtain a permit before destroying endangered species' habitat: now all you have to do is tell the government you're going to do it.
This abandons all government efforts and responsibility for recovery strategies for endangered species.
If enacted, Bill 5 will wipe out the many endangered species in Ontario. These species need protection from the government, not further threats that will reduce their populations to extinction.
This is truly horrifying and only put in place so that rich people and companies can become richer. I am absolutely devastated that the government has no concern for the environment.
