I am against Ontario's Bill 5, officially titled the Protect Ontario By Unleashing Our Economy Act, especially its impact on the Dresden landfill project. The bill includes provisions that would fast-track development, potentially bypassing environmental assessments that were previously required.

Critics, including Walpole Island First Nation Chief Leela Thomas, have voiced strong opposition, calling the bill "devastating" due to its potential environmental and health risks. The landfill site is located downstream along the Sydenham River, within the traditional territory of the Anishinabek people. Advocacy groups argue that the bill undermines Indigenous rights and environmental protections, with Amnesty International Canada warning that it could suspend critical provincial laws related to endangered species and clean water.

Walpole Island First Nation is calling for urgent federal intervention to halt the landfill project, citing unacceptable risks to local ecosystems and public health. The proposed site borders Molly’s Creek and the Sydenham River, which are home to 88 species listed under the Species at Risk Act. Community leaders argue that contamination from the landfill could have far-reaching effects, including pollution of the Great Lakes, a drinking water source for nearly 30 million people

Stop this bill to ensure Dresden receives the environmental assessment it was promised! It is not a coincidence that the bill is lifting all the obstacles York 1 was facing.
