I live in Port perry and am a member of the Scugog Lake Stewards and North Durham Nature. Both organizations work to protect water, land, & biodiversity. We also have an education component to both organizations.
I feel very strongly that both habitat and biodiversity need protection in Durham Region. The ongoing development is moving at a rapid pace and we continue to experience sprawl instead of intensification.
I oppose Bill 5 especially how it affects the Endangered Species Act, the Species Conservation Act, and Schedule 9 which will create Special Economic Zones.
This bill transfers the power to the Cabinet with no legislative and certainly no public oversight and should therefore be stopped.
I also disagree with the changes suggested regarding the Ontario Mining Act. Mining is of course needed however it is critical that the public has input and the government is held accountable.
I urge the Government of Ontario to withdraw Bill 5 in its entirety. The environment and economy need to be considered together in order to flourish as a healthy vibrant community.
