Removing the EA for this project puts the lands and waters of the James Bay Lowlands at risk by stripping away critical foresight meant to guide informed decisions by governments, Indigenous rights holders, and the public.

Mines and other hazardous sites are still being built near Indigenous, racialized, and low-income communities without their consent — a clear case of environmental racism. Bill 5 will only make this human rights and environmental health crisis worse.

The province’s backward approach to species protection builds on a troubling legacy of legislation that has weakened the ESA—exempting major industries, delaying species listings, expanding unchecked ministerial power, and reducing transparency and public access to information.

Bill 5 is a clear signal of Ontario’s unchecked support for private mining interests, sidelining any legal duty to consider public, environmental, or community well-being. If passed, it will erode trust in government transparency and accountability, while inflicting lasting damage on human and environmental rights.
