I strongly oppose the proposed Special Economic Zones Act, 2025. While economic development is important, it must not come at the expense of Ontario’s environment, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability. This legislation would allow the government to fast-track development in areas deemed “critical” without proper public consultation or environmental safeguards. We cannot afford to weaken protections in ecologically sensitive areas just to build more warehouses, box stores, or industrial sprawl.
Ontario’s natural heritage—its wetlands, green spaces, and forests—plays a vital role in climate resilience, air and water quality, and public health. Accelerating development through simplified rules risks irreversible harm to these ecosystems. Once a green space is paved over, it’s gone for good.
True economic security includes protecting the environment we all depend on. I urge the government to reject this bill and prioritize sustainable, community-driven development that respects environmental limits.
