To remove the environment assessment requirement for the York1 waste disposal site is just plain nonsense and inept. Bill 5 is proposing there is no value to the Sydenham’s River most species-rich areas, home to 33 species at risk.
If the dump is built, the toxic chemicals would leach into Molly’s Creek and the Sydenham River. Ford’s government must know that this would happen, otherwise why remove the requirement for an environmental assessment? Choosing a short-term quick fix that would have detrimental effects on the species, on the residents of Dresden, on tourism.
Bill 5 gives the impression we must choose between the economy and the environment—but in reality, Ontario’s economy, health and sovereignty is directly linked to a thriving, healthy environment.
Countries in Europe would love to have the resources that we have in Ontario. Their governments would not be so cavalier to build a land dump that would potentially pollute the waters.
You must not do let this proposal go through.
As well, the “special economic zone” has the potential to be applied here – do not let this be.
