I am disappointed and shocked to learn of the provincial government’s proposal to eliminate and/or seriously water down the Endangered Species Act. With populations of bird and numerous other species’ increasingly under threat from habitat loss, climate change, pesticide use, and a myriad of other human-caused factors, now is the time to take action to reinforce and enhance existing protection measures, not to eliminate or serious damage their effectiveness in the interest of speeding up potentially-destructive development projects. Otherwise, I fear that a great many species will disappear from the province within our lifetime, and our children and grandchildren will never have the opportunity to experience the wonder and wellness-inducing beauty of nature that our generation has enjoyed.
