I am writing to express my extreme disappoint in your proposed Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act.
With the changes to the protections of our wildlife and their habitat, this conservative government is doing the opposite of protecting Ontario. It is destroying Ontario.
In your efforts to accelerate Ontario’s economic growth, the cost will be the health of our actual province. Our natural world is full of interconnections among the land, water, animals, plants and air. Changes to even the smallest part of an ecosystem will have a domino effect, causing changes many other areas of that ecosystem. The health of our ecosystem, and its ability to withstand extreme climate situations requires all the parts of our ecosystem to remain intact and in good condition.
By reducing the protections already in place, and allowing infrastructure projects at a much faster pace, there is no way that the lasting impact can be taken into consideration by these future projects.
This bill is extremely short-sighted, and is an indication that your government has no interest in creating a sustainable province that will remain healthy for generations to come.
I urge you to withdraw this Bill immediately. As the government, you are supposed to be stewards of the entire province, not just the economy. Please work with all the stakeholders, which also include the scientists, to create a solution that will benefit both the economy and the environment.
