There are many countries in the world who have excellent rules around packaging - Norway is at the top of my list. The problem isn't that it's too difficult, its that the people making money don't want to change. But the way we package and sell stuff is unsustainable and we HAVE to change. It is governments job to lead that.
- We need more, not less, management of "flexible" plastic packaging (like food wrap, pouches and bags). If Manufacturers won't do it on their own they need to be MADE to reduce plastic.
- We also need to see recycling extended to schools, multi-unit residential buildings, long-term care and retirement homes. Plastic packaging manufacturers committed to pay for this in 2021, but they see the government waffling, and are now trying to back out. Make them stick to their commitments.
- I also want to see beverage producers to be responsible for picking up beverage containers consumed "away from home" e.g. from parks and mall bins. Producers knew, back in 2021, they would have to do this starting January 1, 2026. But now they are trying to say it may not be cost effective? So we taxpayers should pay for it instead?
- And burning plastics, is NOT "energy Recovery". Do NOT count it as the fourth R.
We need to REDUCE use of plastics.
