Concerns
1. Loss of Protected Recreational Land
Removing Beach Areas 1, 2, New Wasaga, Allenwood Beach, and Nancy Island from provincial park status eliminates critical conservation protections guaranteed by the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006 (PPCRA). These areas are integral to ecosystem health, wildlife habitat, and climate resilience.
2. Precedent for Municipal Sale of Crown Land
The sale of these Crown lands to the Town of Wasaga Beach charts a dangerous precedent for downgrading public safeguards in favor of local development interests. Once sold, these lands cannot be easily returned to protected status.
3. Risk to Natural and Cultural Heritage
While boosting tourism is appealing, it must not come at the cost of irreparable damage to natural landscapes or cultural resources. The shift to the Historical Parks Act (HPA) for Nancy Island and municipal control for beach areas removes key environmental oversight. There’s no guarantee that ecological integrity will be preserved long-term.
