This response is written on behalf of Grand(m)others Act to Save the Planet (GASP) a grassroot, Ontario-wide, climate action and advocacy group that cares deeply about the world our descendants will inherit. GASP unequivocally opposes the removal of 134 acres, which includes 60% of the shoreline, from Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and the proposed changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserve Act.

In Ontario and throughout the world we are facing two related existential crises: climate breakdown and ecological breakdown. Our provincial parks and conservation reserves are instrumental in combatting both. They store carbon, minimize the effects of the sixth great extinction and enhance local communities’ resilience against climate disaster. They are invaluable.

Wasaga Beach Provincial Park staff and community volunteers have dedicated the last 18 years on the Piping Plover Recovery Program. Each season community members contribute an impressive 1500 hours of volunteer service by protecting and monitoring piping plover nests and fledglings. The piping plover is recognized as endangered by the federal Species at Risk Act. By protecting the piping plover the health and resiliency of their whole ecosystem is protected too.

The recovery work is taking place primarily on Beach Area 1 where the piping plovers traditionally nest. Beach Area 1 has also been designated a provincially significant earth science Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI) due to its unique geological features and sand dunes. Sand dunes that alleviate the effects of flooding and protect nearby homes from surges as storms become increasingly severe due to climate change. This important area is targeted for removal from the park.

The proposed changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserve Act will make it easier to remove part or even entire provincial parks. Ontario Parks and Reserves, and the work they do are important in mitigating against climate change and ecological collapse. They are vital to Ontarians. They belong to Ontarians. As part of the Ontario Parks system their lands and waters are protected. If they are sold to municipalities or for development they will not be protected.

GASP believes the provincial government must reconsider its proposal to remove land from Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and the changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserve Act. Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves provide climate solutions and protect ecosystems. Our natural communities are our life support. They are essential now and for the world our descendants will inherit.
