I am writing to express my concern that the Province of Ontario is transferring the Wasaga Beach Prov. Park to the town of Wasaga Beach. Wasaga Beach is a breeding area for Piping Plovers, an endangered shorebird in Ontario. Because these birds nest on sandy beaches, suitable habitat is rare. Moreover nesting on the ground leaves the adults and their young vulnerable to predation. In the past the nesting area has been well managed and protected and Wasaga Beach has become one of Ontarios most productive habitats for the Plovers
If the land transfer moves forward the Province MUST include conditions and commitments as part of the transfer to support Piping Plover conservation and habitat protection. The government must commit to future funding to protect and conserve Piping Plovers, their habitat and nesting areas. Important habitat areas must be set aside and protected. Mechanical raking destroys Piping Plover habitat and this must be prohibited year round in critical habitat areas. During nesting season, fenced areas must be established, maintained and monitored so the the Plovers can be protected from predators, including dogs. Environmental experts, including Birds Canada must be engaged during all stages and implement phases of the transfer to ensure the Piping Plovers are protected.
