I strongly oppose the proposed removal and sale of large portions of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, including Beach Areas 1, 2, New Wasaga, and Allenwood Beach, as well as the transfer of Nancy Island from the PPCRA to the HPA.
Wasaga Beach is not just a tourism asset—it is an irreplaceable natural and cultural treasure. Its dunes, shoreline, and aquatic ecosystems are home to sensitive species and play a crucial role in protecting water quality and mitigating erosion. Removing these lands from the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act strips them of the highest level of environmental protection Ontario can provide.
Once these lands are sold and opened to development, the ecological integrity of the park will inevitably be compromised. Increased tourism infrastructure, private ownership, and commercial pressures will fragment natural habitats, degrade shoreline ecosystems, and diminish the park’s ability to serve future generations.
Economic development should not come at the expense of our shared natural heritage. Ontario’s provincial parks exist to protect nature for the public good—not to be carved up for short-term revenue gains. Revitalization and tourism goals can be achieved through sustainable, low-impact development within the existing provincial park framework, without removing lands from protection or transferring ownership.
I urge the government to withdraw this proposal and work collaboratively with the Town of Wasaga Beach to find tourism solutions that keep these lands in public hands and under full provincial park protection.
