This proposed legislation blocking new bike lanes is a serious mistake. It takes away cities’ ability to make decisions about their own streets—even when those decisions are backed by solid evidence and strong local support. Communities know what works best for them, and provincial interference undermines that local authority.
The claim that bike lanes cause traffic problems simply doesn’t hold up. Transportation experts, including those within government, have repeatedly found that adding safe bike infrastructure helps manage congestion by giving people more options to get around. Removing that flexibility will only worsen gridlock.
Bike lanes also make roads safer for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Protected lanes reduce collisions and prevent serious injuries and deaths. By blocking new ones, this legislation puts lives at risk.
Beyond safety, it threatens other vital uses of street space that residents depend on: transit priority lanes, safe crossings, curbside access, outdoor patios, and school streets. All of these help communities function and thrive.
Finally, this move runs directly counter to climate and public health goals. Locking cities into car-dependent street designs increases pollution, emissions, and sedentary lifestyles. Cities need the freedom to build safer, greener, and more efficient streets—not barriers that force them backward.
