Comment on Bill 60

I am strongly opposed to Bill 60 and any legislation that restricts municipalities from making local decisions about how their streets are designed and used.

This bill goes far beyond bike lanes. Its broad wording would prevent cities from reallocating even small portions of road space for safety and accessibility. It threatens projects like bus lanes, school streets, patios, and safer crossings.

By removing local authority, Bill 60 prevents cities from responding to evidence and community needs. Municipal leaders understand their streets best and should retain the ability to design them for safety, mobility, and sustainability.

The government’s own experts have said that bike lanes do not cause gridlock. In fact, they make traffic flow more predictable and efficient. Blocking street redesigns will worsen congestion and make roads more dangerous for people walking, biking, and driving.
Protected bike lanes and complete streets save lives and make communities healthier and more vibrant. I also want to see fewer cars on the road in Toronto, not more. The real solution to congestion is to invest in reliable public transit and active transportation across Toronto, the GTA, and Ontario. Giving people safe and convenient alternatives to driving is how we truly reduce traffic, emissions, and costs for everyone.

Bill 60 undermines Ontario’s climate and public health goals by locking cities into outdated, car-dependent designs. I urge the Province to withdraw or substantially amend this bill. Municipalities deserve the right to shape their streets based on local priorities and evidence.
Safe, sustainable, and people-friendly streets benefit everyone.
