This is very concerning to me for many reasons.
First: I am a cyclist. I do not own a car and I cannot afford to change that. Why make the cost of living crisis worse by refusing to make this lifestyle possible?
Second: why does the province get to strip local elected government of power? What's the point of municipal democracy if the municipalities have no authority over how their cities are built and run?
Third: it's been proven over and over again that more car lanes does NOT reduce congestion--it just increases the number of cars on the road (which in turn increases air pollution and road maintenance costs). The evidence of this is available in your own court hearings and internal documents.
Fourth: spend some time in Toronto. You'll see that the bike lanes, where we have them, are packed with delivery drivers on e-bikes. In places without bike lanes, those same drivers are on the sidewalks, threatening pedestrians, or in the car lanes slowing down traffic. Adding bike lanes will speed up traffic by removing the slow-moving e-bikes and keep our sidewalks safe.
Fifth: As stated, I am a cyclist. I am notably safer in bike lanes, as you know. And the more bike lanes we add, the more people can safely take up cycling, which is demonstrably a net good for the towns and cities of our province.
