Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving. I have taught five children to ride a bike on the assumption that they can enjoy the freedom and independence of biking on streets that are safe. The proposed legislation puts them (and me) in grave danger as frequent cyclists.
The proposed legislation undermines climate goals and public health by locking cities into car-dependent street designs. Air pollution from internal combustion engines impacts public health which increases healthcare costs and reduces quality of life for those with respiratory issues.
Legislation should encourage public transit, cycling and walking as integrated systems to move people efficiently and safely, not private vehicles.
Municipalities, not the provincial government, are best suited to plan, design and manage road spaces that communities rely on, including transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets.
It is anti-democratic and deceptive to propose legislation that will worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it when the government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. Stop pursuing an agenda based on misinformation!
