This proposal would make Ontario’s roads less safe, more congested, and less responsive to local needs. Protected bike lanes reduce collisions and injuries for all road users. Prohibiting municipalities from reallocating vehicle lanes for cycling will increase fatalities while also stripping cities of the ability to design streets that work for their residents. Data from Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton show that rebalancing road space improves traffic flow and safety for everyone.
Expanding car capacity induces more traffic and emissions, not less. Blocking new bike infrastructure will worsen gridlock, air and noise pollution, while cycling infrastructure, by contrast, improves public health, community connection, and access. It gives people affordable, reliable ways to reach jobs, education, and essential services without needing a car - especially those facing poverty or job insecurity.
Active transportation supports local businesses, reduces infrastructure costs, and builds healthier, more resilient communities. Most Ontarians support protected bike lanes! And global leaders from Paris to New York are expanding them because they move more people per lane and improve quality of life. Ontario should be following that evidence, not reversing progress.
