Once again, this is an egregious overreach by the provincial government into municipal affairs. Determining road allocation and transit design should be the exclusive purview of the people who live in those areas and are most directly impacted by any changes.
Additionally, the default privileging of cars over bicycles- a cheaper, heathier and more environmentally friendly form of transportation- is baseless and infringes on the rights of cyclists to save use of roads. It directly impacts the safety of people who live locally, many of whom are students, lower income or gig workers, in an effort to save marginal travel time for those can afford cars and are more likely to live outside the city. Focusing on building infrastructure for cars will never have a meaningful impact on travel times. If that is the goal, focus should be given to expanding alternative transit options. Ultimately, removing or preventing the installation of bike lanes will lead to an increased number of injuries and deaths for Ontarians.
