I live in the suburbs and drive downtown regularly. I oppose this proposal.
When I drive into the city, I need alternatives to reduce the number of other cars competing for road space and parking. Bike lanes provide this by giving people who live downtown an easy way to get around without driving.
If you force everyone to drive because there's no safe cycling infrastructure, the roads become even more congested and parking becomes impossible. I've seen European cities where extensive cycling infrastructure means way less traffic for the people who actually need to drive.
This provincial interference prevents cities from building the alternatives that would make my downtown driving easier. Let municipalities create the infrastructure that reduces vehicle volumes.
