I'm reaching out as a concerned resident of Ontario about the recently proposed Bill 60.
Rent is expensive. Some of our most vulnerable populations are renters or live with renters - think; recent immigrants, single-parent families, low-income families and our young population. Evictions can change the entire trajectory of a person's life, and housing is the most basic right.
I can't even fathom losing my own home - not being sure what's going to happen tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that. How do you let that not impact your work? How do you hide that fear from your kids? How could you worry about anything but where you could live?
As a resident of Hamilton, there are huge numbers of renters. I want my neighbours, their neighbours, and the entirety of Ontario to remain housed. Wouldn't anyone?
Please, I ask;
1. Reject Bill 60, unless strong tenant protections are added.
2. Support in approving immediate funding to clear the backlog at the Landlord and Tenant Board.
3. Refer to the Ontario NDP's "Homes Ontario" plan for best practices.
Our province's residents matter, and your leadership can protect us.
