The change is unnecessary and should be dropped altogether. The Minister does not need there wide powers claimed and a province-wide prohibition like this does not consider local needs or preferences. This prohibition would lead us to ever widening roads that hollow cities as they did in Detroit. I cycle in Toronto and I appreciate the new bike lanes in places such as Danforth Avenue, College Street and Wellesley Street (behind the Parliament building). If those were forbidden or unavailable, I would have to cycle in between cars, slowing all of us down and risking multiple-car accidents in the high density areas.
The Minister should not hold such broad and ill-defined powers that could prevent the installation of Bus rapid transit and traffic calming devices that make streets better for pedestrians. There is more to life than how fast cars can go. The Minister should consult Cycling experts such as Cycling Toronto instead of making policy with people who only drive. The Provincial Parliament building has subway and bike access. All the province would be better off if there were more places that looked like Queen’s Park. Thank you.
