Hello, I am a resident of Ontario, and I am unhappy with this bill for several reasons. First, the bill is inconsistent with its environmental implications. The bill claims that moving people faster by keeping lanes will help with air pollution. This is a misconception because of the well-established concept of induced demand (see link for more details). By adding or maintaining high traffic volumes, driving is incentives as folks choose the quickest route to their destination. Naturally, this causes more people to drive, creating more traffic. The best way to deal with pollution from cars is to get them off the road by incentivizing viable alternatives. Taking away the ability for municipalities to make their own choices about how to best deal with car pollution is both not helpful towards the environment and an overreach of government power. The decisions concerning municipalities should be left up to municipalities, and the provincial government should focus on delivering on its responsibilities such as education and healthcare. Finally, the bill covers too much ground, and is overreaching. A bill amending the highway transportation act should not also contain amendments to water control, nor acts regarding tenants. For these reasons I do not support this proposal. Thank you for your consideration.
