Dear Environmental Registry of Ontario Team,
Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback on Bill 60. I appreciate the Province’s efforts to improve transportation and reduce delays, and I hope my comments can help support a balanced approach.
My main concern is that the proposed restrictions on reallocating motor vehicle lanes may limit municipalities’ ability to design streets that meet local needs. Cities rely on flexibility to improve safety, support transit, and create options for people to move around efficiently.
Studies have shown, including the government’s own findings from past legislation, that bike lanes do not cause congestion, and that protected cycling infrastructure improves safety for everyone on the road. Policies that prevent adjustments to road space could unintentionally affect not only bike lanes but also transit priority lanes, school streets, patios, and other community-focused uses.
Allowing municipalities to plan based on their own data and consultation helps ensure that projects reflect the realities of their neighbourhoods. Maintaining this local decision-making ability is important for traffic flow, public safety, and long-term sustainability.
Thank you for considering this perspective. I ask that my submission be included in the public record for this consultation.
