I am someone, like most people, who takes the most expedient, easy way to a destination. In Toronto that is most often by car, which I hate doing as it is stressful and expensive. I would love there to be viable, safe and reliable alternatives for better physical and mental health, a smaller environmental footprint and a move towards more sustainable density in Canadian cities, Toronto in particular.
The move by the province to force municipalities (in an act of provincial overreach) to limit the kind of transit infrastructure their citizens need is not only short-sighted but based on factually incorrect assumptions. Bike lanes and better public transit do not meaningfully impact car traffic negatively. Instead they tend to improve it as more people switch to other transit modes and forego car reliance when they feel safe using the mode and that it is reliable and efficient. I would certainly stop using my car (and possibly get rid of it) if cycling and public transit were better supported. I would not be alone in doing so. That would mean less traffic for those who actually need to use a car to get around.
Studies about this and related topics are easy to find, but I've attached a couple.
