Bill 60's provisions surrounding bike lanes are tweaked policies of court-challenged Bill 212 -- taking away power from municipalities once again in defense of the car. Instead of allowing our city streets to be safe and diverse, letting many road users needs, they continue to lean into car-centric populism. Municipalities need the ability to determine where bike lanes go. They have data to say where bikes will make (and have made) a difference in the way people get around. Data from the goverment's own reports says that removing bike lanes will not help congestion, and stopping new ones won't help either.
We need to get people out of their cars, not only for congestion, but to avoid further climate crisis, and to lower pedestrian and cyclist deaths. This week alone, 3 passengers have been killed by drivers on Hamilton Mountain. That's what happens when we design wide, obstacle-free roads. More red tape to municipalities does not fix that.
Bill 60 must not pass, for the health of our cities.
