Consolidation is a terrible idea. Jurisdiction over local environmental issues needs to remain in the hands of local experts.
The proposed boundaries are far too broad and don't take into account radically different watersheds, shorelines, and topography. Regional authorities can better plan and execute mitigation and emergency plans than someone hours away. For example, the environmental issues in Waterloo are drastically different than those in Leamington, yet it's being proposed they be lumped under one region in the name of 'efficiency'.
Municipalities and their taxpayers fund regional authorities to represent them and it works! We don't need more bureaucratic red tape and oversight from those who are too far away from the action (Kitchener is not Windsor and vice versa).
This half-baked idea needs to be scrapped and power needs to remain in the hands of regional authorities to protect our future and our environment! Thank you.
