The proposed consolidation of Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities into seven regional, watershed-based authorities is a positive step toward stronger and more consistent environmental management. By reducing duplication and harmonizing standards, the new structure can improve technical capacity in areas like hydrology, watershed planning, and flood-hazard management. This will help deliver faster, more predictable permitting while freeing up resources for frontline conservation work such as habitat restoration, water-quality protection, and climate-resilience planning. Larger regional authorities will also allow decisions to be based on stronger scientific evidence and full-watershed perspectives, rather than fragmented local approaches.
