I believe that Bill 66 is a bad idea that has the potential to undermine many of the strong provincial Acts that have done much to achieve a balance between development and environmental protection. Ontario is a healthy livable place because municipalities and developers have been forced to adhere to protections afforded by the Greenbelt Act, ORMCP, Lake Simcoe Act and others. These Acts provide many benefits to the people and environment of Ontario including watershed protection, source water protection, human health, recreation, biodiversity and wildlife habitat in close proximity with urban areas. Allowing municipalities to have the option of disregarding these Acts that have taken many years to implement is just not right. We will never have more greenspace in our urban areas than we have right now, and this is so important for healthy communities. When i look at how some cities in the US, like Detroit, have been allowed to develop, and even worse in Latin America where there is virtually no natural public space in cities, i realize how Ontario has been doing the right thing. I strongly believe that Bill 66 should be stopped now.
