I live in Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario. The Province's proposed changes to regional conversation authorities make no sense as they pertain to the Lakehead Region Conversation Authority. The rationale to create the "Huron-Superior Regional Conservation Authority", combining six contiguous southern Ontario conservation authorities is understandable, but the reason to include the LRCA with this group is hard to fathom. What does it have in common (besides both areas being on/close to a large body of water)? The answer is "very little". The LRCA is located more than a thousand kilometers away, with no common watershed or municipal connections. It serves a much more sparsely populated region, is geographically very distinct, has a different climate, and different operational pressures. How could such disparate, far-flung areas be effectively administered as one?
I oppose this proposal and instead strongly suggest that the LRCA be established as a distinct and separate regional conservation authority, serving the the vast area of northwestern Ontario.
