I work for 1 of the 36 Conservation Authorities.
There are alot of arms in the air about the new large borders.
I believe new larger boundaries won't cause a problem to how our work is accomplished.
We will still need local offices, and places for people like me to report to. It would make sense to me that the people reporting to these offices would also have a local scope of work. Just like how the MNR has many operations offices across the province.
I'm interested to know more about how governance and funding could change, perhaps having many more municipalities within a larger boundary could better split the "pot" across the regions making local/regional goals easier to accomplish. Currently our watershed based boundaries have created rich and poor authorities where some have more than enough money to achieve goals and others have to find ways to squeeze two pennies together to make a dollar.
I think that having a large board of directors wont be an issue, even Ontario legislature has 124 members. There can be problems when you have too few members anyway.
Many people don't want this change to happen because of all the cited local issues it will cause. I can't see it causing earth shattering local issues so long as there are still local offices, with a local scope that will be clearly defined by the province and a fair share of the money required to achieve the conservation authority's goals.
I believe in what Conservation Authorities do, and I believe that the Ontario government is right to make this change.
If you don't stir the pot your gravy will burn to the bottom.
