I am very concerned about many elements of this.
I feel that key watershed and development decisions will no longer be made in a way that includes key local perspectives and protections.
But my biggest worry is for the impact this will have on natural areas that protect Ontario's biodiversity.
I am a member of my local conservation authority, where I hike on lands that still protect trilliums and unusual fungi and native wildflowers. Lands where turtles and birds nest, where migrating birds can visit to feed.
I do not believe that protection will be maintained without a strong local organization that truly understands and cares about the site-specific features of protected lands.
Greenspace areas within the urban portions of our province are incredibly valuable for both creatures and people, but they are also fragile, threatened and in need of strong protections.
This proposal appears to offer little benefit to Ontario residents but expose us to massive risk.
If conservation authorities are not functioning as desired, please reform them. But mega-scale, top-down government authorities rarely accomplish anything effective.
