I disagree with the proposed Bill 66 in that to make us competitive supposedly we are going to sacrifice environmental safeguards and public safety. These Acts can not be masked as "red tape" but rather as very significant public health or environmental protections or in the case of the Greenbelt Act protecting essential food production on some of the best soils in Ontario. The Oak Ridges Moraine protects a very significant aquifer while the Lake Simcoe Act protects a significant recreational fishery as well as drinking water for a lot of people. The Clean Water Act was passed in response to an Inquiry following the deaths of 7 people and hundreds sick partly because water quality safeguards were removed by a previous government. I hope the province is not prepared to make that trade off again when the protection zones under Source Water Protection plans make up a very small percentage of the province and/or municipalities. It should be required as part of the municipal bylaw to complete
a risk assessment stating how many lives are we prepared to trade for not complying with the Source Protection Plan. What is an acceptable ratio of jobs for lives?
Public safety is not red tape.
