The Invading Species Council must begin to include in their educational effort the new and extremely destructive alga called Starry Stonewort. It has taken over our lake, even pushing out hybrid Eurasian watermilfoil. Its plant-like, crunch architecture allows massive growth of zebra mussels. As it is an algae it sits above the bottom only anchored with glass like threads on which its star-shaped bulbils occur which are its propagation method. Underneath and in the huge blooms it becomes anoxic . It will not large fish in and small fish cannot live because of the anoxia. It is very destructive to all types of fish. It is already moving north on the Trent-Severn Waterway and is also in Lake Simcoe. We cannot lose our very productive northern lakes to this new Starry stonewort.
