I am very excited to comment on this low-carbon hydrogen strategy. The province of Ontario has done and excellent job of researching the benefits of Hydrogen in our current climate economy.
I am an Ontario business owner and president of an Emissions Testing service, we are one of the largest providers of on-site emissions testing for both on-road and off-road diesel vehicles in the province.
I have spent the past 2 years working with hydrogen that is produced on-demand as a compliment to diesel combustion. The Carbon emission reductions results are astounding. A diesel engines efficiency is dramatically increased when hydrogen is present in the combustion chamber.
Reducing NOx emissions more than 40% is common in all my testing. Reducing particulate matter by more than 40% is also common.
My research has lead me to the conclusion that if all municipal vehicles in an urban area were equipped the hydrogen on-demand systems over 300 tones particulate matter could be reduced in Ontario alone and further increases the health of urban residents as Particulate matter is known to cause Cancer.
Hydrogen on-demand systems for diesel applications also have proven to reduce fuel consumption, my testing has shown an -11% reduction in fuel consumption in municipal vehicles. These Hydrogen on-demand system need government offered incentives to become main stream in all transport applications.
This is the right technology to reduce emissions from current and existing new and old diesel vehicles that operate in Ontario. My extensive testing has also shown that and older diesel engines from that late 1990's once equipped the hydrogen on-demand systems can actually have lower emissions than diesel engines with 2010 and newer emissions controls.
This will help in 2 ways;
1) older vehicles equipped with hydrogen can meet a much newer emissions standard.
2) Vehicles built after 2007 that have tampered emissions control systems once equipped with hydrogen on-demand systems emission could meet or exceed their original emissions requirements.
We do not condone any tampering of emissions controls however we do understand that that several engine manufactures have been sued in court for producing emissions controls that are defective and do not operate as indented rendering the vehicle not fit for commercial use and unmerchantable. These defects have plagued the trucking industry and have lead to unacceptable downtime and costly repairs that should have been avoided.
Hydrogen on-demand systems need to be installed on these tampered vehicles as a way of reducing emissions in a way that the vehicles owner can make a living. Emissions controls are supposed to last the life of the engine. In many cases these defective emissions have to be replaced every 6 months and cost over $13,000.
It is actually appalling that the government has done nothing to force these engine manufactures to correct the problem via recall so the engines and emissions controls will function as intended. In many cases the vehicle is actually emitting more emissions than permitted by law and still the government does nothing to force engine manufactures to correct the problem. All that happens is the engine manufacture pays a fine to the government and the vehicle owner is left with a truck that is defective and no way of earning a decent living with all of the unexpected emissions control expenses.
Hydrogen on-demand systems is a simple and affordable way of reducing emissions while decreasing fuel consumption further reducing CO2e and meeting ambitious climate goals.
